Big bodied and bracing...somewhat chewy in texture.

46.3%

$$  Excellent price for an 18 year old

Bunnahabhain is the contrarian of Islay distilleries using unpeated or lightly peated malt for its whiskies.  This results in a "gentler" Islay spirit that has a toastiness versus the characteristic

Islay smoky flavor.  While the coastal influence is present in this expression, it is so well integrated that it is very unlike the typical Islay medicinal note found in whiskies of the other eight distilleries on the island.

bunnahabhain-18-120In 2010 Bunnahabhain "relaunched" its 18 year old sherry matured  core expression in a version that is non-chillfiltered.  It no longer uses caramel coloring and is bottled at a higher ABV from the prior 43%.  The higher ABV adds a noticeable richness and improved mouth feel from earlier versions.  This often overlooked brand produced a number of well

balanced and interesting expressions and in our opinion is well deserving of Jim Murray's "liquid gold" award.

SUGGESTED CHOCOLATE PAIRING

Chuao - Gran Cacao, Melao, Dark Grignottine, Java & Miel

Bunnahabhain has such a split flavor personality that it mates well with many of the Chuao bonbons.  The Gran Cacao hits the dark chocolate note, while Java brings out a hidden coffee note to this dram.  When paired with Melao's salt carmel, you will have a whole different experience, while Miel accentuates the honey and malty notes.  Last but not least the orange peel of the Dark Grignottine "plays nice" with Bunnahabhain's sherry fruitiness.  Have fun trying them all.

SUGGESTED CIGAR PAIRING

Tatuaje Cabaiguan Guapo

A medium bodied cigar with great vanilla, wood and caramel flavors that sing the mid-notes in this composition.
