Pre-released in 2009, the San Lotano Habano line of cigars is a reincarnation of a Cuban brand of the same name, which was produced by A.J. Fernandez' grandfather. Now Fernandez honors his family name and tradition with a cigar that is rich, flavorful and well crafted.
Pre-Smoke
Released in four vitolas,Churchill, Torpedo, Toro and Robusto, the San Lotano is a great looking cigar. Cloaked in a dark, oily, Brazilian wrapper, the cigar is well constructed, and solid. The wrapper itself is pretty rustic, looking like tanned leather and is very thick and bumpy.
The scent from the wrapper is full of earthy, chocolatey goodness, and the cold draw is easy.
Burn
After a lengthy toasting to obtain an even glow, the San Lotano burns fairly well. While touchups are not needed, the burn line is a little ragged. The light gray ash is solid and tight. Resting smoke is moderate, and a simple puff on the cigar produces a mouth full of rich smoke.
The Flavor
Initially the San Lotano starts with pepper and spice, but right away flavors of caramel and chocolate appear to sweeten the flavor. The base flavor is kind of nutty and the smoke is smooth and creamy.
At mid-cigar, a creamy sweetness overlays the initial flavor notes, with cedar and spice now appearing in the finish.
As the final third is reached, coffee and caramel flavors dominate with a long lasting spicey finish.
The San Lotano Habano is well balanced and flavorful, with complex flavor transitions and perfect construction.
