When you think of the Wild Wild West, what comes to mind are prospectors, cowboys, shootouts, saloons and rockgut whisky. Who’d thought that you would find single malt Scotch whisky at 7,600 feet elevation in the heart of gold prospecting territory?
But if you’re ever in Atlantic City, Wyoming, a must stop for any single malt aficionado is the Two-Bit Cowboy Saloon at the Miner’s Delight Inn Bed & Breakfast. Be prepared to step back into the Old West – Wind River Mountain style, as this area was once heavily populated by gold prospectors seeking their fortunes in the nearby Sweetwater Mines. In some respects, little has changed, as occasional fortune hunters still work the local hills and mines looking for that elusive mother lode.
Originally the Carpenter Hotel built in 1904, the three room and five cabin Bed and Breakfast is now owned and managed by Bob and Barbara Townsend. True to its history, the B&B doesn’t offer television, hot tubs or internet connections. What it does offer is a setting that takes you back into America’s history of the Dakota Territory, comfortable accommodations, the finest gourmet breakfasts, and the largest single malt Scotch whisky collection in Wyoming.
Every month Bob hosts the “Second Saturday Scotch Sipping at Six” at the Cowboy Saloon and no reservation is required. You get to sample 5 wee drams from his collection and enjoy light hors-d'oeuvres between the drams. But of course whisky is poured every night the bar is open, so stop on by even if it’s not the second Saturday of the month.
